Work and Career Based Learning

Youth Apprenticeship

Youth Apprenticeship is an academic and career planning opportunity for Juniors and Seniors who are self-driven and ready to work and get paid in a career path related industry. Students must be on track for graduation, have a good attendance record, have a completed resume and be able to provide their own transportation to the work site. This opportunity is designed around the Wisconsin Youth Apprenticeship Program, where there are specific requirements that need to be met throughout the one or two year program. This program allows students to sample the career they are interested in at a real-world, work environment. An employer will be matched based on the student’s interests and abilities and must be within the chosen career pathway.

Work Experience

Job Shadowing

Job shadows give students the opportunity to experience a typical day in a career of interest. Students spend one on one time with an adult shadowing their job giving time for observation and questions about the career. This allows students to start identifying a career of interest and gain knowledge about a particular career as well as the skills or education one may need on the job. Often times, students learn about related careers in the same field.

Learn the art and strategy of Public Forum debate in order to enrich your skills in research, writing, speaking, and critical thinking. Compete against teams from other schools and win cool prizes. Teams consist of two people who prepare both a pro case and a con case for interesting and relevant topics that are chosen by students at the start of the season. Tournaments take place two Saturdays a month from mid-September to mid-December. Teams compete in front of one judge (not in front of a large audience). There is no experience necessary. Everyone can learn how to be a competitive debater.

Book Club
Book Club is a great way to get together with students in grades 9-12 and discuss good books! We read about 5-6 books a school year. Books are ordered at the public library, so you do not have to buy copies of books (unless you want to, of course). After we finish reading each book, we meet in the library, eat cookies, and drink milk while discussing them. Students for the past several years have enjoyed spending a Friday night at Barnes and Noble and watching a movie version of one of the books we have read. You do not need a recommendation to join Book Club; it is a great way to socialize and be a part of a group here at WHS!

You may eventually want to submit some of your writing to be potentially published in our ECC Conference’s Creative Writing magazine, Perspectives.

One person, acting as the Dungeon Master (DM), is responsible for controlling the actions of all the characters the PCs encounter, either good or bad. The players decide how their characters will react to different situations and attempt to perform actions such as attacking monsters, crafting weapons and armor, or interacting with Non Player Characters (NPCs) by rolling dice and adding bonuses they receive from items or innate abilities which are decided upon creation of the character. No prior experience necessary!

Student Council:
StuCo is a group that works towards improving the school/community and the leadership abilities of its members. Our three biggest events throughout the year are Homecoming (including dress up days, pep rallies, parade, coronation of court, and dance itself), Jingle Book Bash (a community-wide holiday event with a different charitable recipient each year), and WinterFest (similar to Homecoming, just no parade).  Along with those main events, we also attend leadership workshops, create group bonding events (Escape Rooms, volunteering, etc), and help out in the school district as much as possible.  Membership is based on character references and an application; members are chosen at the end of the school year for membership the following year - for example, applications will be available for 2022-2023 in March and members for that school year will be selected and notified by the middle of May.  Note: Class Officers (who are voted on by their peers) are automatically members of Student Council.
